The Shop Manager will be responsible for leading and managing the daily operations of our Newport branch of Ashley Convenience Store. The role ensures efficient functioning of the store while maintaining high standards in customer service, inventory control, legal compliance (especially with licensing laws), and team supervision.

Key Responsibilities:

Operational Management :
Supervise daily store operations and ensure smooth workflow.

Ensure the shop is adequately stocked, clean, secure, and well-presented at all times.

Monitor and manage inventory levels, place supplier orders, and conduct stock audits.

Oversee opening and closing procedures, including cashing up tills.

Team Management :
Supervise and coordinate a team of 4–6 retail assistants.

Create and manage staff rotas to ensure proper coverage across shifts.

Lead staff recruitment, induction, training, and ongoing performance reviews.

Foster a positive and productive team environment.

Licensing and Compliance :
Ensure full compliance with UK alcohol licensing laws, trading standards, and environmental health regulations.

Conduct regular checks to ensure adherence to age verification policies (Challenge 25).

Maintain up-to-date licensing displays and required documentation in-store.

Financial Management
Handle daily cash management, till reconciliations, and safe deposits.

Prepare and submit weekly and monthly financial reports to head office.

Monitor sales trends and implement strategies to maximise profitability.

Customer Service :
Deliver exceptional customer service standards and resolve escalated complaints.

Handle queries and ensure positive engagement with local residents and regular customers.

Maintain a safe, welcoming, and community-friendly shop atmosphere.

Security and Loss Prevention
Implement loss prevention procedures to minimize theft or discrepancies.

Monitor CCTV (where available), oversee staff conduct, and report any incidents.

Person Specification:
Required Experience & Skills
Minimum 3 years’ experience in a similar role (e.g., Store Supervisor or Manager in retail/off-licence).

Proven ability to manage retail staff and store operations independently.

Strong understanding of UK retail and licensing laws.

Good numeracy and IT skills (POS systems, Microsoft Excel, etc.).

Excellent communication, leadership, and organisational abilities.

Ability to handle high-pressure situations and manage priorities effectively.

Desirable Qualifications
Personal Licence to sell alcohol (or willingness to obtain).

Certification in Retail Management, Customer Service, or Food Safety.

Fluency in spoken and written English.
